In 2010 I was right in the middle of growing my real estate career and I was volunteering with animal shelters quite often. From that, I learned that there was a need in our community for a different way to help animals. I began pursuing the idea of starting an animal rescue here in Kingston and with the help of my amazing Co- Founders we created Kingston Animal Rescue, a 100% volunteer run no-kill animal rescue charity.

Throughout the years we have worked to make this organization grow to where it is now and we were able to recruit many volunteers and foster homes to help us. The Kingston community has been amazing as there truly is always a need but we often fi nd people willing to help!

Running the animal rescue keeps me busy but it is such important work and I’m lucky enough to have great volunteers to help. It is a passion of mine that I am very proud of and would be happy to answer any questions you may have or even help you adopt or foster an animal once I help you find and move into the perfect home

What We Do

• Founded in 2010, Kingston Animal Rescue is a volunteer-run, no-kill animal rescue group.
• We rescue and find forever homes for animals in need.
• We are a registered charity. (83024 4802 RR0001).

Using a network of foster homes, we take in last chance animals – animals that are at high risk of euthanasia or those that would otherwise be at risk without our help. This includes animals at shelters and stray animals. We also assist in emergency rescues, including small animals removed from neglectful situations.

Our priority is small animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, gerbils, mice, hedgehogs, ferrets, and others, as there is no other rescue group in our community dedicated to these types of animals. We regularly take in cats and occasionally dogs. We rarely accept owner surrendered animals.

As a no-kill rescue, our animals stay in foster homes until they are adopted. We work to educate the public about the proper care and treatment of animals as well as the pet overpopulation crisis and the importance of spaying/neutering and adoption.

In 2012-13 Kingston Animal Rescue championed the creation of a by-law to ban the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in Kingston pet stores. After an intense year of council meetings, petitioning and public outreach, a by-law that restricts the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in Kingston pet stores to shelter and/or rescue animals only came into effect on August 14, 2013. Kingston now has one of the most progressive pet store by-laws in the country.

Our Mission

To end the suffering of animals with rescue, rehabilitation, adoption and education.

Our Goals

1. To rescue, rehabilitate and find suitable adoptive homes for animals in need.
2. To provide emergency animal rescue and disaster response services when possible.
3. To end the euthanasia of adoptable animals in shelters by educating the public and reducing the number of unwanted animals using sterilization and education campaigns
4. To promote and educate the public about the humane and proper care and treatment of animals (including the importance of spay/neuter), and the importance of adoption.
5. To partner, assist and work together with other animal organizations, shelters, individuals and communities to accomplish joint goals to prevent and end the suffering of animals.

As we are in the midst of summer, you may start to notice some signs going up in your neighbours’ yards.

Here’s what you need to know about these “Great Curb Appeal” signs:

This year’s Kingston Blooms competition will be judged a little differently than previous years. Nominations for Kingston’s most luscious and lively gardens will be delivered in the form of yard signs passed on by other nominees in a “pay-it-forward” fashion.

“We decided to change up our judging process a bit this year to make it as interactive for participants as possible. Nominations are completely in the hands of those participating and most passionate about beautifying their community. This competition promotes excellence in gardening, good horticultural practices and really gives residents a sense of pride in accomplishment,” says Sue Hitchcock, Kingston Blooms coordinator.

The contest kicks off with Mayor Bryan Paterson, members of council and Kingston Blooms volunteers as they choose our first 13 nominees. Each nominee will receive a “Great Curb Appeal” sign to place in their yard. Two weeks later, they will choose the next nominees by moving the sign to their yard, and so on until the contest wraps up on Aug. 27.

Those nominated must then email Sue Hitchcock at sueh@cityofkingston.ca with their name, address, phone number, a brief description of their garden and why they love gardening to be officially entered in the competition.

A “Garden of the Month” will be chosen at the end of each month. Residents can vote for these gardens on the Kingston Blooms Facebook event page, where photos of nominees and a poll will be posted at the end of each month. Each month’s winner will receive a hand-crafted metal sign to display in their garden.

The contest runs until Aug. 27 and a garden party will be held in Macdonald Park at the end of August for all nominees. Stay tuned to our social media channels for more on voting.

The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing in well-planned infrastructure that will improve community connectivity and ensure the continuous and safe flow of people and goods across road networks.

Mark Gerretsen, Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and His Worship Bryan Paterson, Mayor of the City of Kingston, today announced joint funding of more than $180 million for Kingston’s third crossing bridge project.

The governments of Canada and Ontario are each contributing up to $60 million to this project through the Provincial and Territorial Infrastructure Component – National and Regional Projects. The City of Kingston is responsible for the balance of the funding.

The project involves building a new, two-lane bridge over the Great Cataraqui River, connecting the east and west sides of Kingston, almost halfway between Highway 401 and the LaSalle Causeway. The bridge will include options for shared and active transportation, including a multi-use pedestrian and bike pathway, sidewalks and cycle lanes on the road approaches, as well as connections to future waterfront trails. This new bridge will help alleviate congestion, improve emergency response, and help residents get to work on time and back home safely at the end of a long day.

Ontario is making the largest infrastructure investment in hospitals, schools, public transit, roads and bridges in the province’s history. To learn more go to Build ON.
